Pleasure, the inciter of evil
Pain, which deters from good
Rashness and fear, foolish counsellors
Anger, hard to appease
and Hope, easily led astray.
The gods, Plato tells us, mingled these affections
with irrational sense
and all-daring love,
and thereby created man...
